Emily Leaphart
Suzuki violin
For over 15 years, Emily has maintained a lively schedule as a teacher and multi-genre performer throughout upstate New York and New England.
Emily is recognized for her patient and warm approach to teaching, easily establishing rapport with students of all ages and personalities. Her primary goal for each student is that they feel confident and capable when they play their instrument. Humor is one of her most frequently used tools, infusing each lesson with positive energy and helping students maintain a bright outlook toward each new challenge.
Valuing the unique personalities and abilities of every student, Emily dedicates herself to honoring students’ creative impulses and providing a supportive environment for musical exploration. In this nurturing environment, students are held to rigorous technical standards and cultivate their own style and sound that they can be proud of.
Emily teaches both traditional and Suzuki violin/viola, having completed her Suzuki training with Christie Felsing, James Hutchins, and Judy Boussuat-Gallic. She has extensive training in Creative Ability Development, an approach for which she is also certified to train other teachers. She had the privilege of teaching both CAD and Suzuki group classes alongside CAD creator Alice Kanack for a year, an experience for which she will always be grateful.
Emily earned her bachelor’s degree in Viola Performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, where her primary teachers were John Graham, George Taylor, and Melissa Matson. Additional studies at the Scuola Musica di Fiesole in Florence, IT, led to opportunities abroad including freelance work in Salzburg and workshops with Maestro Daniele Gatti in Siena. Recent affiliations in the Northeast include work with Fra/ctured, Cordancia Chamber Ensemble, Upstate Strings, Delmonico String Quartet, Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, and Northeastern University.
Emily teaches private lessons and Suzuki group classes at Powers Music School, and can be found at various Powers camps during the summer months. She also serves as a music instructor for grades K2-8 at Bridge Boston Charter School during the school year. She maintains a private studio at her home in Brighton.
