Sarah Sutherland is a Boston-based musician who performs and teaches throughout the Northeast. She is currently the third horn in the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and hornist of the Back Bay Brass quintet. Ms. Sutherland is the Finance Officer for the Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra (MOSSO) and sits on the board of the Springfield, MA AFM Local 171. Sarah has performed and recorded with many ensembles, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops Orchestras, Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), Boston Ballet, Boston Lyric Opera, Landmarks Orchestra, Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Portland (ME) Symphony Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic, and Canadian Opera Company, as well as many touring soloists and ensembles in the Northeast. She was a Tanglewood Music Center Fellow for two summers.
Born and raised in upstate New York, Ms. Sutherland began her musical studies at the early age of four on the violin and at eight on the horn, adding the viola, trumpet, bass, and steel pans during high school. She moved to Rochester, NY to study with W. Peter Kurau at the Eastman School of Music; while there, she also studied horn with Jacek Muzyk and natural horn with Derek Conrad. After the completion of her Bachelor of Music degree, Sarah came to Boston to pursue her Master of Music degree and Graduate Diploma from New England Conservatory, where she studied with Jason Snider and James Sommerville. She additionally holds degrees in mathematics and statistics and a certificate of actuarial studies from the University of Rochester.
