The Appalachian (lap, mountain, fretted) Dulcimer is a joy to learn. It is easy for a beginner to play, but also offers some challenge for more advanced players. Its lovely sound can “sing” a melody alone, and also blend beautifully with the voice and other instruments.
In group classes or semi-private lessons we’ll learn about the instrument’s history, tunings and playing styles. We’ll learn strumming, chords, harmony, back-up and lead styles, and how to read tablature. You’ll be able to play a scale and a tune before the end of the first class!
Songs and tunes will be drawn from American and International traditional music.
No prior musical experience is necessary, however, students will need their own 3 or 4 string dulcimer (these can be rented from the instructor at the first class). When students are ready to purchase a dulcimer, the instructor will suggest various makers to contact. In addition, students should buy a “Snark” tuner.
Dulcimer classes typically meet on Thursday evenings.
