From Billie Eilish to Taylor Swift, from Chappell Roan to Adele, from Lady Gaga to Ed Sheeran; themes about mental health are found in pop music all the time! This class for teens will guide students through the vibrant world of pop music and help them discover how artists use their creativity to express their mental health journeys and lived experiences through lyrics and melodies.

In this class, students will have the opportunity to engage in lyric and music analysis, meaningful song discussions, and creative songwriting/rewriting experiences including Blackout Poetry, piggy-back songs, fortune cookie lyrics, and GarageBand loops.

A couple of things to note…

Music selections will not be censored to preserve the writer’s intent but may be screened at the discretion of the teacher. Class discussions may explore heavy topics such as anxiety, depression, resilience, self-acceptance, body-image, and many more.

Lyrics in our Lives is an educational experience. Classes will be led by Board Certified Music Therapist, Chey Eagle, but are not therapeutic in nature. The class may explore basic techniques to help teens support their own wellness and mental health, but should not be viewed as, or take the place of, a group therapy session.
