This program runs full-year, but new students are welcome for the spring semester! See details about auditions below.
This Early Music ensemble for teens will focus on two topics: 1) playing your string instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass) with replicas of historical bows and a rhetorical approach, and 2) the formation of a viol consort—learning to play a viol (Bass, Alto, Tenor, Treble Viola da Gamba) with our great collection of viols at Powers!
Potentiae Collegium is a conductor-less ensemble – the music director will lead the ensemble as a
leading player. This ensemble typically meets Wednesdays from 6:00-8:00 pm, and is open to violins, viola, cello, bass, harpsichord, viols, harp, voice. Other instruments may be added upon approval of the director.
Repertoire we will study, discuss, and rehearse will range from around the XVI century into the first half of the XVIII century. You’ll learn some of the different music notation of those centuries, and read music scores from copies of manuscripts, facsimiles, and selected treatises. You’ll perform music from the perspective of historical performance practice— “thinking critically, reasoning independently, and collectively performing.”
