Explore new musical “languages”!
Do you remember the first time you learned a new language? Maybe it was your Spanish class in school, or maybe a great K-drama inspired you to learn Korean. Or maybe you even took up Klingon after watching Star Trek. Real or fictional, it’s exciting to learn new ways to talk to each other!
We communicate with each other through music, too! In these workshops, you’ll explore new musical “languages” and get an introduction to new ways of speaking, learning, and connecting. Step through our doors to learn new skills and rhythms from Latin America, Scandinavia, the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe – all without leaving Belmont!
Never played any of these styles before? Don’t worry! Just like spoken languages, you don’t have to be fluent to benefit from knowing a few words. Come with the skills you have, and try something new with other friendly musicians!

This class is open to any string student (age 10 and up) who has strong music reading skills.
Modal Music Group

Instructor: Tev Stevig
Best for: New-comers in modal music and experienced players alike! (ages 10+)
Instrument: Any rhythmic or melodic instrument, including the voice
Please have ready: Your voice and/or your instrument
This workshop will focus on group playing of various modal musics from Greece, Turkey and the Middle East: folk, ritual, and classical, as well as some contemporary modal music. We will work with big and smaller sub-groups on themes as interpretation, ornamentation, microtones, and aspects of rhythms and odd measures. We’ll also include elements connected with what it means to play this music in a group today: orchestration, sound timbres, roles, improvisation, creativity, etc.
In order to attend this workshop, a good level of reading music is required. Participants are welcome to bring any rhythmic or melodic instrument, including the voice. For ages 10+.
This workshop is ideal for new-comers in modal music as it offers a practical way of getting to know a wide spectrum of repertoire but also for more experienced musicians because of the hands-on approach.
