Creative Ability Development

Age: 9-13

Cost: Full year (9 classes) - $220 ($200 tuition + $20 registration fee)

Powers is pleased to offer our first regular Creative Ability Development (“CAD”) class, led by Ellery Klein (instructor of the popular CAD and improv workshops at Workshop Week!).

“CAD” was developed by Alice Kanack in Rochester, NY, and is a method to foster creative thinking and creativity through musical improvisation.

Through a mix of games, exercises and questions, we’ll move away from the usual “right or wrong” approach to music teaching, and instead answer questions like “what if?” and “what would happen if I….?” and “What does a bored porcupine sound like if it were a violin?” We’ll explore chord changes, modes of the scale, expressiveness, and communicative aspects of music. You’ll gain a greater ability to work off the page and create music with new friends, even if you don’t have a common repertoire.

This class is for anyone at an advanced-beginner to upper-intermediate level of playing (Suzuki Books II & III, for example; or if you’ve played at least two years). It is primarily geared towards string players, but pianists, C wind players (flute, recorder, oboe) and vocalists are also welcome.

Please note: Creative Ability Development does not follow the same weekly schedule as other group classes. We will meet once a month on Fridays on the following dates: 10/13, 11/17, 12/8, 1/12, 2/9, 3/8, 4/12, 5/10, 6/7.
