Lift Each Other Up: Powers’ 60th Anniversary Celebration

Saturday, May 3rd, 2025
Tracy Powers Concert Hall at Powers Music School
160 Lexington St, Belmont, MA 02478

Join us to celebrate 60 years of lifting each other up through music!

Since 1964, the Directors, Board, teachers, staff, volunteers, and families of Powers have spent countless hours ensuring that all people in the area have opportunities to pursue their goals, build confidence, and feel valued through music. Powers Music School’s history reminds us of those who championed community music education from the start, and spurs us on to keep alive that mission, passion and dedication for years to come.

On Saturday, May 3rd, come enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres while Powers’ faculty, students, and friends take you through the history, memories, and future of Powers Music School!

Percussionist Gavin Farrell was named Executive Director of Powers Music School in May of 2017. With an administrative, teaching and performing career that spans more than 25 years, Mr. Farrell brings a wealth of experience to Powers and Belmont. Along the way, he has learned from master drummers and jazz luminaries, performed everywhere from dive bars in the rural south to the Kennedy Center’s mainstage, and inspired countless students to think creatively and have fun making music.

Sarah Freiberg Ellison

As the daughter of Mildred Freiberg, one of Powers’ “founding mothers”, Sarah Freiberg was one of the first students at Powers Music School in 1964. Sarah now teaches cello at Powers, is an active board member, and coordinates the annual Stein Chamber Music Festival. As a musician, Sarah is a tenured member of the Handel and Haydn Society and Emmanuel Music, and a corresponding editor of and frequent contributor to STRINGS magazine. She also teaches historical performance at Boston University and performs annually with Blue Hill Bach and the Connecticut Early Music Festival.

Powers’ Board President Evan Louden grew up in New Hartford, CT then moved to the Pacific Northwest for college. He attended Lewis & Clark College, graduating in 1997 with a degree in percussion performance. Evan moved to Belmont in 2008 with his wife Camillia, shortly before their daughter Sylvia was born. Evan served as registrar for Powers from 2009 to 2015 after which he resigned to attend a coding boot camp. Evan is currently a Senior Software Engineer for Luggage Forward, a percussionist with Bay Colony Brass, and recently started a funk/soul-inspired band named Carboy.
